About York Centre, UK
York is one of the oldest cathedral cities in England and is famous for its Viking heritage. A compact city, York is entirely walkable and its attractions can be seen over the course of a long weekend. Every year the city attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors who come to see much of its vaunted history.
One of the biggest attractions is the world renowned York Minster. Dating back hundreds of years, the cathedral is a fixture of the city skyline. Visitors can explore the cavernous interior and stay to take part in Evensong. For the more adventurous of spirit, take the ancient winding stairs to the rooftop where your nerves are rewarded with breathtaking views across the whole of York.
The only way to really experience York centre is by foot. Between certain hours of the day the centre is closed to cars and pedestrians have priority, filling the many winding lanes. One of the most popular streets is Shambles. Down this narrow lane the timber framed buildings seem to lean inwards, almost touching each other from opposite sides of the lane. Shops and restaurants inhabit the ancient buildings and make for a popular place to dine with tourists.
An ancient city of ghost stories and Viking ancestry, York is one of the prettiest and unique cities in England.
